In a 10-year partnership to advance biomedical research through high-performance computing, Cleveland Clinic and IBM have started deploying the nation’s first healthcare quantum computer on the main campus, Health In Analytics reports.
IBM Quantum System One is the country’s first onsite, IBM-managed quantum computer. It is scheduled to be installed at Cleveland Clinic by the end of 2023. This installation is part of the Cleveland Clinic-IBM Discovery Accelerator, announced in 2021, which aims to leverage Cleveland Clinic’s medical expertise and IBM’s technology expertise. To accelerate biomedical discovery, the organizations will leverage quantum computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and hybrid cloud technology.
“The current pace of scientific discovery is unacceptably slow, while our research needs are growing exponentially,” said Lara Jehi, MD, Cleveland Clinic’s chief research information officer, We cannot afford to continue to spend a decade or more going from a research idea in a lab to therapies on the market. Quantum offers a future to transform this pace, particularly in drug discovery and machine learning.”
The computer is a key part of the organizations’ ongoing partnership aimed at accelerating discovery in healthcare and life sciences.
